Guitarist and singer-songwriter whose fusion of jazz, rock, Indian and ragtime styles made him a cult hero.
Praised by the DJ John Peel as “one of the most interesting and inventive guitarists around”, he was best known for the album Fully Qualified Survivor (1970) which we worked on with Mick Ronson.
Incredibly prolific, he recorded 58 albums and from the late the 90s established a new following, particularly in the US with champions including Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth. Moore appeared on the 2012 tribute album Oh Michael, Look What You’ve Done: Friends Play Michael Chapman, along with Lucinda Williams and Hiss Golden Messenger, and British musicians including Kemp and Maddy Prior.
We sadly lost Michael in 2021 aged 80.
