Laurie’s professional career began in 1954. In the 60s he worked with musical director Tony Hatch, leading to playing on many hit records including Downtown by Petula Clark. He was musical director for Engelbert Humperdinck from 1970 to 1975, working on many of his albums and tours. Laurie then became more associated with jazz, working as musical director for the singer Cleo Laine, which soon led to him joining the John Dankworth Band as pianist and arranger.
This period was followed by more artist collaborations and television work becoming prominent. Further artists he worked with include Judy Garland, Liza Minnelli, Sammy Davis Jr., Gilbert O’Sullivan, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Lesley Garrett . And he became widely known for his high profile, much loved tv themes including Game for a Laugh, Wicked Women, Maggie and Her, and Beadle's About. His theme for Blind Date was even sampled for the late 90’s dance track Synth & Strings (Yomanda).
Laurie had a long close partnership with Michael Parkinson , including as musical director of the Parkinson chat show. He was also the Musical Director for the first three series of Strictly Come Dancing, for providing many arrangements every week.
He was awarded the Gold Badge of Merit by the British Academy of Composers and Songwriters , and with an MBE in the 2013 Birthday Honours for services to music.
Laurie sadly passed away aged 86 in January 2025.
